Forget the depth of the pour and you can calculate a flawless square footage and still order the wrong amount of concrete, because a 4-inch patio and an 8-inch driveway need completely different quantities from the same footprint. The same 240 sq ft patio needs a completely different concrete order depending on whether it’s a walkway or a driveway meant to carry a truck. Depth isn’t a detail to check later — it’s the second half of the formula, and skipping it is the most common way concrete orders go wrong.

Pavers — A Different Calculation Entirely
Pavers aren’t poured, so they don’t use cubic yards at all — they’re sized and counted the same way as tile, with a gravel and sand base underneath instead of a concrete slab.
Base material: patio sq ft × base depth (in ft, typically 4–6 in) ÷ 27 = cubic yards of gravel
A paver patio means two purchases: the pavers themselves (counted like tile) and the gravel base beneath them (calculated in cubic yards like concrete, just with crushed stone instead of ready-mix). Don’t let one calculation stand in for the other — they use different formulas and different suppliers.

Calculating only length × width gives you a footprint, not an order. Concrete is a volume — depth is not optional information, it’s half the formula.
Depth is almost always specified in inches but needs converting to feet before it goes into the formula. Forgetting to divide by 12 overstates your order by roughly 12 times.
Most ready-mix trucks have a minimum order, often around 1 cubic yard. A small project that calculates to 0.6 cubic yards still needs to round up to the truck’s minimum, not down to what’s “needed.”
