Do Fixtures Reduce Your Square Footage?

This is the question that confuses most people. The short answer: measure wall to wall including fixtures — but for tile, you may want to subtract the areas under fixed fixtures you won’t be tiling under.

Calculating Floor Tile for a Bathroom

Bathrooms need more tile waste buffer than most rooms — lots of cuts around the toilet base, vanity legs, and doorway threshold mean more offcuts per square foot than a simple rectangular room.

Calculating Wall Tile for a Bathroom

Wall tile is calculated differently from floor tile — you’re measuring vertical wall surfaces, not the floor. The approach depends on whether you’re tiling all four walls or just a shower enclosure.

Full bathroom walls

Measure each wall separately: width × height. Add all four walls. Subtract openings (window, mirror, medicine cabinet — roughly 15 sq ft each). Add 10% waste.

Mistakes to Avoid

If you’re tiling walls too, floor area and wall area are completely separate calculations. Many people order tile using their floor sq ft and run out halfway up the shower wall.
