This is the question that confuses most people. The short answer: measure wall to wall including fixtures — but for tile, you may want to subtract the areas under fixed fixtures you won’t be tiling under.

Calculating Floor Tile for a Bathroom
Bathrooms need more tile waste buffer than most rooms — lots of cuts around the toilet base, vanity legs, and doorway threshold mean more offcuts per square foot than a simple rectangular room.

With 10% waste: 40 × 1.10 = 44 sq ft

Calculating Wall Tile for a Bathroom
Wall tile is calculated differently from floor tile — you’re measuring vertical wall surfaces, not the floor. The approach depends on whether you’re tiling all four walls or just a shower enclosure.
Full bathroom walls
Measure each wall separately: width × height. Add all four walls. Subtract openings (window, mirror, medicine cabinet — roughly 15 sq ft each). Add 10% waste.

Shower enclosure only
Measure the three walls inside the shower separately. Height from floor to ceiling (or to where tile ends). Multiply each wall width × tile height and add together.

The same split-and-add method used for any irregular room works perfectly for L-shaped bathrooms. Divide at the natural notch, measure each section, add them together.

Mistakes to Avoid
If you’re tiling walls too, floor area and wall area are completely separate calculations. Many people order tile using their floor sq ft and run out halfway up the shower wall.
Unless a vanity is permanently fixed and will never be moved, tile the full floor area wall to wall. Removing a pedestal sink later and finding bare subfloor underneath is an expensive surprise.
Small mosaic tiles and diagonal patterns waste significantly more material — use 15–20% for mosaic and 15% for diagonal. The small piece count from cuts adds up fast.
